DIY Camping Lights

There are many families that love to spend their vacations out in the fresh air and surrounded by nature. They love the freedom they have to run around and go swimming in a clean lake. The fact that there is no one else around, clambering to get somewhere makes it much more peaceful.

There are a number of things you can do as a family when out camping. One that has become a tradition with many people is the time they spend making their own camping lights. Why spend hundreds of dollars on supplies when you can make a few of them yourselves?

There are a number of different things you can use to make your own camping lanterns. They might not last very long – but they give your children something to do and something they can be proud of.

Coffee Can

Punch holes in the side of a coffee can using a hammer and nail. The holes need to be two inches apart exactly and situated above the base of the can. One inch of petroleum needs to be spread in the bottom of the can. Place three or four candles standing up in the jelly. Now light the candles. You should see the candlelight through the holes on the side. Even when the candles are burnt down the jelly will burn for a few more hours.

Soda Can

The soda can is the easiest one to use because most families have plenty to spare. Use a craft knife or a box cutter to cut a few slits in the side of the can. The slits should run from ½ an inch from the top to ½ an inch from the bottom. There should be no more than ½ an inch space in between each of them.

Push the top and bottom of the can together carefully and use a pencil to pull the sides out. Your soda can should look similar to a Chinese lantern. Cut away two of the bars to create an opening for the candle. Use a small amount of melted was to secure the candle inside and light it.
